Sunrise debuted at the Hemingway Days Festival in Key West, Florida in July of 2003 in support of the Hemingway Collection at the Customs House Museum administered by the Key West Art and Historical Society.

Act One: The first half of the play presents a young Ernest Hemingway as he explores the great outdoors of Northern Michigan and the affections of an Indian girl. After graduating from high school, he works as a cub reporter at the Kansas City Star prior to enlisting in the Italian Ambulance Corps in World War I.

Act Two: The second half of the play details Hemingway’s war experiences in Italy, his wounding and his love affair with the nurse who cared for him. The result was one of the defining novels about World War One, A Farewell to Arms.
